2024 Scholarships

Player Scholarship:

The “Medicine Hat Minor Softball Association Scholarships ” are awarded to recognize Medicine Hat Minor Softball Association players, umpires and/or coaches who have demonstrated a strong commitment to the sport of softball through active participation and volunteer involvement. 

Up to five (5) yearly $500 scholarships will be awarded at the end of each season:

• Up to three (3) MHMSA Player Scholarships
• Up to two (2) Umpire or Coach Scholarship

The selection committee has the flexibility to reallocate scholarship money to alternate categories depending on applicant submissions, and with MHMSA executive support.

Application Process

1. Applicants are required to complete and submit the current season's “MHMSA Scholarship Application Form” and all required documentation by September 15th at midnight.  Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.  Instructions on where the application should be submitted will be on the form.
2. The following must accompany the completed application form:
1. Personal letter explaining how softball has impacted their life, involvement to date, future softball and academic goals, and why you believe you deserve the scholarship.
2. Resume outlining your involvement as a player, coach, volunteer or umpire as well as any awards that you have received. 
3. Proof of enrollment at a recognized post-secondary institution. 

3. The Scholarship Selection Committee will review all applications and supporting documentation submitted.  Selection will be based on demonstrated participation and involvement in softball with Medicine Hat Minor Softball Association.

A Scholarship Selection Committee composed of three (3) people and will be identified each season.  These individuals will be selected in the order below, providing they do not have a Conflict of Interest:

1. President
2. Director at Large
3. Vice President of Administration
4. Vice President of Operations
5. Player/Coach Development Director
6. Any other MHMSA Executive member
7. Any other MHMSA Board member if there are not adequate numbers based on the above.

1. The Scholarship Selection Committee reserves the right to not award a scholarship if a suitable application is not received. Decisions of the Scholarship Selection Committee are final.
2. Scholarship recipients will be announced at the MHMSA Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November of each year. 
3. Funds will be paid directly to the successful applicant(s) by November 15th.

Eligibility

1. Applicants must be enrolled full-time and currently attending a recognized North American post-secondary institution. (ie. universities, community colleges, technical institutions).
2. Applicants must have been a registered player, coach or umpire for a minimum of two (2) seasons with Medicine Hat Minor Softball Association.
3. Applicants may apply for a scholarship annually, but may only be awarded one scholarship per season.
4. Applicants must be in good standing with MHMSA and have not received any disciplinary action by MHMSA or Softball Alberta. 

Scholarship Funding Sources

The Medicine Hat Minor Softball Association may be funded through the following:

• Initial investment from MHMSA of $5000 funded through the GIC.
• A portion of the annual Thunder Try Out Fees.
• Thunder Banquet Silent Auctions 
• 50/50 Raffles
• Any other funding and/or sponsorship opportunities that arise. 

Medicine Hat Minor Softball Association reserves the right to reduce or suspend awarding the Scholarship(s) if there are not enough funds to support the Scholarships in a particular season.
